Frequently Asked Questions

Premium Hardwood vs. Chocolate-Dyed, what is the difference?

Premium Hardwood Mulch is all-natural and made strictly from the bark of hardwood trees. It is fine in texture and a beautiful quality mulch. This mulch is perfect for you if you typically re-mulch every season. Because it is finer in texture, it does tend to break down faster, but the trade-off is it produces beautiful soil quality over the long term.
Chocolate-Dyed mulch is color-enhanced, double-processed hardwood or recycled mulch. It is by far our most common mulch - known for its longevity.

The Chocolate-Dyed Mulch is a beautiful quality while being slightly "chunkier" than the Premium Hardwood. It tends to stick around longer than Premium Hardwood. The added brown dye helps maintain color longer. Of course, all mulch fades and breaks down, but this will buy you more time. If you tend to re-mulch every other year, this mulch is for you!

What steps go into a mulch install if I hire you?

We will first come out and carefully spray any existing weeds and grass growing in your landscape beds. The herbicide will take 5-10 days to kill off these weeds. You are then ready for mulch! Upon coming out to install mulch, the first thing we will do is walk around your property and look for any hazards that we might come across while edging your beds.

We will also be looking for specialty plants we might need to look out for. We will then cut down/remove any dead weeds that we sprayed previously. Next, we will redefine any natural edging that you have. It will create a nice sharp edge separating your landscape beds from your lawn. Then we will apply a granular pre-emergent, this will help create a "barrier" to prevent weeds from growing.

Next, your mulch is installed. After we rake out all your fresh new mulch, we will apply another layer of pre-emergent to prevent any seedlings from germinating into weeds in your fresh mulch. At this point, you are all set! Time to sit back and enjoy your weed-free summer!

Can I get the mulch delivered and install it myself?

No, sorry. We are a service-based company, not a supplier. However, we have local suggestions for mulch suppliers. Just ask us!

Is your Weed-Free Guarantee pet-friendly?

Yes. We use two herbicides to control your weeds throughout the season. One is a granular pre-emergent that is applied at the time of mulch installation. The second herbicide is a liquid chemical that we use to spot-spray weeds. Both are chemicals that need to be respected. However, they would need to be ingested in large quantities before they affect pets. The liquid herbicide typically dries within one hour of application.

How many times a season would you recommend I have my shrubs/bushes pruned/trimmed?

Although every situation is unique, typically, we recommend pruning/trimming your shrubs twice per season. The first pruning is completed in the early summer after the initial burst of spring growth, and then the second pruning is completed in early - mid-fall as the season winds down. Some customers even opt for a third pruning in between to ensure a more consistently "neat appearance."

But what are the benefits of pruning twice versus pruning once? Simple answer: the more often a shrub is pruned, the thicker/fuller it becomes. When you enter the dormant season with a neatly trimmed shrub, you then enter the peak growing season in the spring with all the new growth happening exactly where you would like it to be, thus producing a fuller and more beautiful shrub. If you only prune once a season, say in July/August, you will still be getting growth for the next couple of months. In turn, you will enter spring with an unkempt gangly shrub. All the peak spring growth will then be on areas of the shrub that you have no intention of keeping anyway. Thus, wasted development and energy will, in the long run, produce a thinner and ganglier shrub.

Do you offer a warranty on the plants you install?

No, we do not. Many Landscape companies offer warranties on the plants they install, however the reality is, the customer oftentimes pays for the warranty with significantly marked up material costs to “cover” the “warranty”.

At goMULCH we approach this from a different angle. We realize you want peace of mind with your new investment in landscaping. However the reality is, we are installing living things that are susceptible to many external forces. External forces that are largely out of our control.

So our goal is to set our customers up for success. When planting, we use high quality Planting Mix and then apply a Starter Fertilizer.  We then provide you with a Moisture Meter to help monitor watering, accompanied with detailed Watering Instructions.

Along the way we are never more then an email or text away if you have any concerns or questions. We absolutely want your new plants to survive and thrive!

What happens if a problem occurs?

We will then come out and analyze the situation. If we feel like everything has been done to provide the plant with the best chance for success, we then work with you in installing a new plant. Often times we meet in the middle. The customer pays for the plant material. We cover the labor, pick up, planting mix, and disposal. This works out well for both parties. It actually is much cheaper for you, the customer!

After working with this system for many years it truly has become clear…. This is the way to go for everyone involved!
